The Learning Garden

Warren Prescott Learning Garden

Before & After

In 2008, a group of parents, with the support of Dr. Amara, the school principal, worked together to successfully apply for a grant from Boston’s Small Changes Program. The intent was to transform a barren, largely asphalt area of the school property into a garden with native plants and raised planting beds for edible crops. This hands-on, creative learning space provides an opportunity for students to plant, maintain and observe how small changes to their surroundings can have a great impact on the environment. The City awarded the school $5,000 to fund this project.

The intial seed money grew into a major community project due to the amazing collaboration between parents, school staff, neighbors and other Charlestown residents. Hundreds of hours of volunteer labor plus donations of supplies and building materials stretched the original funding beyond everyone’s imagination.

The garden demonstrates on the outside of the building the wonderful teaching and learning environment that takes place inside the school.
